You are currently browsing the monthly archive for September 2009.

Each year, JSTOR updates the special URL (a.k.a. token) required to activate or revalidate a MyJSTOR account.  To find this special (and lengthy) URL so you can create/reactivate a MyJSTOR account, follow these steps:

  1. Log on to the MLWGS network
  2. On the Windows Start Menu, Select Computer
  3. Double-click on the SHARED (S:) drive
  4. Open the STUDENTS folder
  5. Open the LIBRARY folder
  6. Open jstor_access_steps_updated092309 (available in PDF, Word 2003, and Word 2007)
  7. Follow the instructions*

*If you don’t have time to complete the instructions at school, then drag the file to your flash drive and complete the steps at home.

Since our subscription to Science Direct does not include ebooks, you’ll have fewer search frustrations if you use the Journals Search interface (one of the tabs under Advanced Search).  Once here, limit SOURCE to subscribed journals and DATES to 2004 to present.   Journals Search also gives you the option to limit the search by document types, such as article and/or review article.  The image below shows what the search screen looks like with the proper options selected.

Our subscription does not include off-campus access, so budget time to search this database from school!  If you choose to ignore my advice and search from home anyway, you won’t be able to access the full-text, so make sure you copy and paste the complete article citation (NOT the link to the article), so you can download it at school later.

When you’re trying to cram for that physics test in the 10 minutes between when your bus gets to school and when class begins, memory superpowers might make it to your three wishes list.  Based on an ongoing study by a team of researchers at University of California Irvine (for which they published their first article in 2006), you might want to beware what you wish for…

Since starting with a case study of Jill Price, their first subject, their research has expanded (slightly) to involve four people who suffer (yes, suffer) from hyperthymesia or superior autobiographical memory.  They don’t forget anything they experience.  Says Price, “If you throw a date out at me, it’s as if I pulled a videotape out, put in a VCR and just watched the day.”  To get a quick overview of all four individuals, see this week’s post on Mental Floss magazine’s blog.

MicrophoneLooking for an audience to hear your poetry? your music?  Would you like to practice that presentation you’re giving to a group in your community next week?  Just trying to work on your stage fright?  Open Mic and Munchies may be your ticket!

Held during most study blocks on designated days, these events are an opportunity for you to share original work or warm up your vocal cords and confidence sharing work from a published, reputable source.  Sign up in the library to participate on Sept. 24th or Oct. 6th.

Power and Water in the Middle EastLast year, the MW Library added NetLibrary to its online resources, a collection which currently includes over 5000 books about a wide range of topics, often representing a range of perspectives.  Similar to physical books, an ebook being viewed by one person in NetLibrary cannot be viewed simultaneously by someone else (unless you’re looking over their shoulder at their computer screen).

From school, you can click into NetLibrary from the library blog’s Databases page.  To use NetLibrary from home, you first need to create a personal account while you’re at school.  You’ll find a link to Create a Free Account near the top right of the home page.  Instead of having a school user name and password, you’ll use a personal user name and password to log in from home.

On your personal computer, you might run into an issue with NetLibrary where it tries to open each page of an ebook as a separate PDF.  If this happens, you simply need to change a setting in your Adobe Acrobat Reader.  Watch the related screencast for instructions about how to do this.  The school computers have this setting configured already.
