evilsavingsposter2In these sobering economic times, NPR reported on an unusual approach that Finland is hoping will help end its recession. There’s a national ad campaign (with ads designed by Bob Helsinki) against saving money and promoting spending money instead. Here’s one poster with the heading that warns (roughly translated) – Saving is not always good.

This runs contrary to an ad campaign sponsored by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants which is using a spokespig, Benjamin, to encourage Americans to save money. Check out www.feedthepig.org for more information about their campaign. Interesting opposing approaches…

Would you like to read (or re-read) The Secret Life of Bees so that you can take part in the book and movie discussions scheduled for late February – or maybe read the book before seeing the film version?  Good news!  The English department has generously loaned a classroom set to the MW Library so that I have extras for students and faculty to borrow.  Hope you see you soon!

shelfsigns2If you like to wander bookstores and libraries in search of something to read, then you’ll likely appreciate the addition of several signs along the shelves of the MW Library to improve its browse-ability. The first wave included signs in Fiction, History (900’s), and Arts (700’s), as well as a few scattered among other areas of the nonfiction collection. Here’s a sample from the History wall (notice the signs for France, Japan, and the Middle East).

In conjunction with Black History Month, the MW Library is sponsoring a bee season of events related to the novel and movie The Secret Life of Bees.

Wednesday, Feb. 11, 3:30-5:30 p.m. (Feb. 18 is the backup date in case of inclement weather) – The movie The Secret Life of Bees will be shown in the library after school

Tuesday through Thursday, Feb. 17-19 - during lunch – three-part showing of the movie during the school day for students unable to stay after school on Feb. 11

Watch for other impromptu events as well – such as a demonstration of a bee dance by Mr. Tharp and representatives from the science department…
