You are currently browsing the monthly archive for December 2008.

Are you pondering what topic to select for your persuasive speech in Mrs. Boswell’s FIRC class?  See the related project guide for resources to facilitate your success.  I look forward to working with you in January.

The GSGIS Foundation generously donated ten copies of this year’s All School Reads selection: Till We Have Faces by C.S. Lewis.  If you need to conserve money or would rather not purchase a copy (available for $10 through the Dragon’s Lair), please stop by to borrow one of the library’s copies.

For their January meeting, the Senior Literary Society will be reading J.D. Salinger’s “A Perfect Day for Bananafish“, originally published in the January 31, 1948 issue of The New Yorker.  It was subsequently published in Nine Stories, a collection available from the MW Library, and there’s also a podcast of the story from The Talking People Podcast (an educational project by an English teacher in Spain) if you’d like to listen to it on your mp3 player.

Looking forward to curling up with a good book over winter break?

Come down to the library and check out the books that have been added to the MW Library’s collection in the last week, including the following (title names linked to book descriptions on Amazon):

Tallgrass

The Day of Battle: The War in Sicily and Italy, 1943-1944

The Professor’s Daughter

Kartography

The Girl Who Played Go

When I was a Soldier

The Fall of Rome: A Novel

Born on a Blue Day: Inside the Extraordinary Mind of an Autistic Savant

Zorro: A Novel

The Lazarus Project

Of course, there are many books already on the shelves that may be on your list, including Marley & Me and Three Cups of Tea.

Hope to see you soon!

I recently enhanced the MW Library’s e-book offerings by purchasing a shared collection of e-books from NetLibrary. The books in this collection cover a wide range of topics.  Here are ten technology titles that might provide some entertainment over your holiday break (and of course there are many, many curriculum-related titles too):

  • How to Do Everything With Google Tools
  • How to Do Everything With Your Digital Camera
  • How to Do Everything With Your Web 2.0 Blog
  • How to Shoot Great Travel Photos
  • Digital Photography Quicksteps
  • The Art of Flash Animation: Creative Cartooning
  • Digital Culture, Play, and Identity: A World of Warcraft Reader
  • Nintendo Wii Flash Game Creator’s Guide: Design, Develop, and Share Your Games Online
  • Generation Digital: Politics, Commerce, and Childhood in the Age of the Internet
  • Managing Virtual Teams: Getting the Most From Wikis, Blogs, and Other Collaborative Tools

To access these books from school, simply go to the NetLibrary site.  If you’d like to access books from home and have the option to save favorites, then click the Create a Free Account link at the upper right of the main screen and follow the simple instructions.

Like our Gale e-books, these books may be viewed in their entirety online; however, unlike our Gale e-books, the ones from NetLibrary may only be viewed by one user at a time.
