Earn recognition for your writing through writing contests.  The English department has compiled a list of writing contests with deadlines from as early as Oct. 15, 2008 to as late as April 15, 2009.   Remember to let your English teacher know if you submit an entry so that s/he can root for you!

You’ll notice a new eye-catching display in the library’s main area today: Latin American Literature (in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month which runs through October).  To celebrate, there’s an essay contest related to reading a book by a Latin American author.  Here’s how it works…

Choose a book by a Latino author.  Read it and then write a 500-word essay in which you explain how the literary work enhanced your understanding of Latin American culture.  By no later than Oct. 31st, submit your essay to your English teacher, Mrs. Williams, or Ms. Sellors.  The winning essayist will be awarded a $25 gift card to Barnes and Noble.  Good luck!
