What an impressive encore performance by Ms. Arnold’s and Mr. von Klein’s students in today’s encore session of Lunch Buddy Blues. Most students read original poetry - a few even sang their blues poems (like this duet). A duet croons the blues

Don’t forget to stop by the library during lunch this Friday for the encore presentation of Lunch Buddy Blues - featuring Ms. Arnold’s students with musical accompaniment. This session will feature original blues poetry! If you choose to attend, please practice proper etiquette - entering and exiting the library only between readings or performances, not during them.

Students in Mrs. McKay’s Human Geography course are grappling with the challenge of conceptualizing the shopping center of the future. Below is a photo sure to drop a few jaws (it certainly made mine drop) of a shopping center in Sweden designed by Gert Wingardh that is scheduled to open in 2009. It was featured on a blog by David Carlson that I ran across while putting together a project guide for the assignment. This example illustrates the creative potential possible in this research project. Best of luck, students!

Attention students - All library materials need to be returned to the library by Senior Showcase day, June 4th.  If you have any questions, please stop by.

Thanks to Daniel Reynolds, who graciously offered to put his entry in the National Art Honor Society’s contest to create art from recycled materials on display in the library.  Come by to see it up close!

Next Friday, May 23, will be the last installment in the Google series of Library Lunch Bites. The session will cover both Google Reader and Google Calendar. I couldn’t resist hosting the encore performance of Lunch Buddy Blues on May 30th, so I’ll save coverage of Google Groups and PicasaWeb for next fall.

The last book order of the year has begun to arrive and you’ll find a selection of titles on display in the main area of the library.  There are still a couple weeks left to borrow books from the library, so now that testing is behind you, spend a little time reading for fun!

Selection of books from the most recent order

Now that testing is almost in our rear view mirror and summer is on the horizon, reading for FUN may actually be possible again! Attached is a PDF that provides you with one-click access to a variety of magazines, journals, and one of the e-books included in our Gale databases.

Although I created this list with teachers in mind (as reflected in the professional publication section of the list), many titles appeal to a wide range of readers, including Discover, Essence, Guitar Player, Inc., Money, The New Yorker, MacWorld, National Geographic Adventure, Popular Science, Psychology Today, Smithsonian, Sports Illustrated, and Time.

You’ll need the school’s Gale user name/password to access these from home, so download the Portable reading shelf (PDF) to your home computer or a flash drive, keep the password nearby, and enjoy!

Do you have an overdue library book?  I’ve designated this week as amnesty week, so if you return your book by this Friday, I’ll waive your overdue fines.  See you soon!

Kudos to Ms. Arnold, Mr. von Klein, and the students who participated in last Friday’s Lunch Buddy Blues jam session and poetry reading. Guests were surprised to discover band members jamming on a piano, drum set, guitar, trumpet, and sax - so much for that stereotype of libraries as quiet places!

There will be an encore performance on Friday, May 30th featuring students reading and performing original work instead of reading work by other writers. Drop by to add a little rhythm and rhyme to your day!

Novelist Min Jin Lee visited MLWGS during 4th block today to chat with students and faculty about writing.  In one of her responses to a question, Mrs. Lee said that she thinks her best talent is her curiosity.  As an emphatic believer in the power of curiosity and questioning to inspire learning, guide research, and lead to new knowledge, her comment really resonated with me.  It also connected with a quote from Albert Einstein that I read recently in an article about gifted students:

The important thing is not to stop questioning.  Curiosity has its own reason for existing.  One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality.  It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery every day.  Never lose a holy curiosity.

The Library Lunch Bite session about Google Spreadsheets scheduled for next Friday has been postponed for one week so that the library can host Lunch Buddy Blues: a jam session and poetry reading featuring students from Ms. Arnold’s English class and musical guests. Bring your lunch and drop by for a little blues next Friday, May 9th.
